Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American rapper singer. Queen Latifah's performance in music film and television has resulted in her receiving a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born in and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. a police officer. Her parents divorced when Latifah was ten years old. Latifah, who was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah can be described as an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and gentle". Her cousin granted it to her in the age of eight. Being a tall girl, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward on the basketball team at her high school. In her high school's play, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's original group that included several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was a member of Latifah at the time was awed by her song. In 1988 she released Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
